Managing Editor, Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology

The American Society of Nephrology (ASN)—which represents more than 20,000 clinicians, researchers, and health professionals dedicated to leading the fight against kidney disease—seeks a fulltime Managing Editor for the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN). The Managing Editor will manage the publication of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, overseeing all logistics relative to the highest quality submission and review of manuscripts and print and online journal production. Work with the CJASN editors and ASN staff to support a standard of operation that will maintain the exemplary position of ASN publications in the field of nephrology.

Specific Responsibilities:

Monitor and maintain appropriate standards for journal. Identify changing technologies to insure publications meet industry standards and remain competitive. Work with ASN staff to develop measures for publication’s performance and systems of monitoring/improving same.

• Provide support to editors. Promote editorial initiatives; oversee trajectory of submissions for editors and reviewers, maintain daily communications with EIC and consult with him with regard to problems with Associate Editors, reviewers, and authors; maintain list of invited material and EIC’s action items; consult with EIC with regards to reader/reviewer concerns; prepare agendas for editorial meetings; oversee all interactions with editors. Respond to all inquiries from authors, reviewers and editors in a timely manner; treat all groups as customers.
• Oversee monthly line-up for journal. Review all proofs to insure that presentation standards are maintained; address and resolve any concerns in that regard. Review all accepted articles prior to release to SHERIDAN for figure clarity and legibility.
• Identify need for internal systems changes, as appropriate, and determine best resources, internal and external, to effect requisite changes. Work with ASN colleagues, as appropriate, to insure system consistency and that funds are available for any proposed change. With the input of the Executive Editor, CJASN and Kidney 360 and Senior Director of Communications, implement changes to enhance efficiency, improve quality and maintain publication branding/identity.
• Work with editors, ASN Publications Committee, and ASN staff to insure all journal policies address current issues in scholarly publishing and are consistent with policies of other ASN publications and with general ASN policies.
• Work with peer review management system vendor to address and resolve any concerns of editors, reviewers or authors and insure timeliness, accuracy, confidentiality and objectivity of peer review.
• Cross-train on Kidney360 peer review management system and serve as back-up administrator, as needed.
• Maintain and, develop when needed, reports to track submission and journal publication trends, as required by editors.
• Work with EIC to prepare annual report for Publications Committee (spring) and reports for CJASN Business Meeting and Editorial Board Luncheon (fall).
• Work with printer and online publisher to insure journal quality control and performance concerns are met as they arise. Maintain instructions to authors that are clear, understandable for authors and in sync with needs of printer and online publisher. Maintain and update instructions for figure submission to insure highest publications standards, and provide optimum support to authors to meet those standards without undue effort.
• Manage interactions with and meetings of Editorial Board. Work with editors to address any issues of poor performance by Editorial Board members.
• Update CJASN website through Highwire JCore platform.
• Oversee CJASN social media channels (ie Twitter).
• Attend meetings: Council of Science Editors (CSE) and/or International Society of Managing & Technical Editors (ISMTE), vendor meetings (HighWire, ScholarOne, Sheridan, etc); make contacts at meetings to measure ASN journal operations against industry standards, and identify any areas of quality, peer review administration or journal publication policies that might need to be improved or updated.
• Participate in ASN staff meeting calls and in-person meetings as required.
• Undertake additional projects, publishing ventures as required.
