The Self Storage Association shall labor diligently to enhance the business viability of its members and to expand the industry through promotion of the usage of self storage. The SSA shall strive to advance public awareness of the industry and to enhance the image of the industry in the eyes of the general public, government, the news media and our residential and commercial customers.
The SSA shall represent the industry before the U.S. Congress, federal regulatory agencies, and work with other national, regional and state associations to represent the self storage industry's interests before all other governmental entities.
The SSA shall work to bring together multi-national, national, regional and state self storage associations to fulfill its Mission and to serve as the principal clearinghouse of industry data and information, working toward common goals.
The Director of Legal & Government Affairs reports to the Senior Vice President, Legal & Legislative Counsel. This role is responsible for providing administrative and strategic support for SSA’s legal and government advocacy efforts within the self storage industry and before state and local governments.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Identify and monitor litigation, legislation, and regulations that could affect the self storage industry.
Draft and edit reports and other materials for members regarding litigation, legislation, and regulations affecting the self storage industry.
Establish and maintain database of relevant documents regarding litigation affecting the self storage industry.
Prepare reports and talking points for use when supporting or opposing legislation or regulation.
Engage with members and other affected industries to support or oppose legislation or regulation.
Establish relationships with other real estate trade associations and build coalitions as needed.
Present legislative updates to members via conference calls and at association conferences.
Communicate with and monitor progress of contract lobbyists regarding legislation upon which the association has taken a position.
Develop strategy for and oversee SSA PAC activities.
Travel to meet with members, contract lobbyists, legislators, and government staffers, and provide or prepare legislative testimony as needed.
Draft and edit proposed legislation.
Expected Areas of Competence
Strong research, writing, and oral presentation skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Ability to pro-actively identify threats facing members and develop creative solutions to mitigate the threats.
High level of self-motivation and ability to handle multiple tasks and issues at one time.
Ability to work independently or with a group as the circumstances dictate.
Strengthen participation in grassroots and PAC activities.
Five to seven years of experience working in legal or government affairs environment.
Experience working for a trade association, elected official, legislative committee, or law firm preferred.
Litigation, paralegal, or similar experience preferred.
Real estate industry experience a plus.
