Job Title: Senior Director, Strategic Communications and Content
Reports to: Chief Marketing Officer and Vice President
Job Summary: Responsible for managing the daily work operations of ASHP’s Communications division, including strategic communications, public relations activities, and stewardship of ASHP’s brand and image. Serves as a leader and strategic advisor to senior leadership and staff on all communications-related matters.
Recommends and executes division work goals, objectives, and strategies. Champions and monitors the annual goals for an assigned division.
Recommends and executes corporate and/or operating policies, practices and procedures for assigned division. Administers established operating policies, procedures, and practices to help ensure compliance within the assigned division.
Participates in the preparation of the annual operating budget for an assigned ASHP division. Monitors and controls actual performance against the annual budget for an assigned division.
Recommends staffing levels and an organizational structure for an assigned work division. Recommends personnel actions affecting subordinate employees within an assigned division. Assists in career planning and staff development for all divisional employees. Responsible for setting employee performance objectives, conducting performance reviews and recommending pay actions for direct reports.
Major Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead the organization's enterprise-wide content strategy: develop, curate, and manage the ASHP editorial calendar by creating internal and external communications strategies that connect initiatives, issues, and audiences.
In partnership with the Government Relations division, develop and execute an integrated public affairs strategy to advance ASHP's advocacy and legislative agenda. Proactively identify and leverage a range of media and communications tactics; as well as, effectively leverage connections in media and public policy to enhance ASHP's thought leadership and positioning on issues and policies critical to supporting ASHP's membership and advancing patient safety.
Provide oversight of media relations efforts, advising staff on strategies for proactive media opportunities and op-ed placements. Provide media coaching and interview training to staff, as appropriate.
Oversee and provide strategic direction to a team of writers responsible for identifying and producing news stories and featured content to inform and engage ASHP's membership.
Enhance the voice of ASHP's executive leadership, leading the strategic use of speeches, talking points, blogs, and other communication vehicles to articulate ASHP's brand position and strategic priorities across an array of external and internal audiences.
Provide strategic guidance for use of outside agencies to augment and enhance in house skills and experience.
Develop standards, processes and best practices for content creation, distribution, maintenance, retrieval, and repurposing, including the real-time implementation of content strategies.
Effectively manage a team of communicators and writers, providing a professional, nurturing environment to promote creativity, innovation, and outstanding customer service.
Be a positive, trusted partner and connector across the organization.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Health, Public Policy or Journalism required.
Master's degree strongly preferred.
12 plus years of communications experience in a health-related field and/or professional association, including at least 10 years of proven success leveraging strategic communications to advance organizational public policy and advocacy initiatives.
A minimum of five years leading multichannel content strategy including demonstrated success leveraging strategic content and communications to drive engagement among key constituent groups.
Strategic and tactical expertise across multiple aspects of communications including media relations, corporate communications, issues management, and crisis communications.
Experience building high functioning, collaborative teams; managing budgets, vendors, and large cross-functional stakeholder groups.
A team player with a strong customer service orientation. Promotes collaboration and transparency. Can effectively navigate organizational dynamics and build positive, productive relationships within the team and throughout the organization.
An engaged leader and mentor who inspires confidence, instills trust, cultivates innovation and values diversity in perspective and thought process.
A content strategist and gifted story-teller who can elevate the tone and quality of ASHP's content. Will effectively articulate ASHP's value proposition and position the organization as a trusted, go-to thought leader for media, policy makers and other external constituents.
Strong journalistic instincts with demonstrated expertise in health policy relevant to ASHP's strategic priorities.
A well-honed ability to distill complex ideas into simple, intellectually credible narrative.
Highly skilled communicator who can effectively convey key messages in writing or verbally to a wide range of audiences including members, press, policy-makers, executives, staff, and the general public.
Brings a dynamic network of strong relationships across the media landscape that can be leveraged to foster connections, gain insight and ultimately tell the ASHP story in a compelling way.
