Director – Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology (WLM)
The Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology (WLM) is seeking a Director to succeed the current director who has announced plans to retire in November 2019 after twenty-two years with the organization. The full-time, salaried Director reports to the WLM President and the ASA Liaison for Associations and Business Relationships. There are three staff members who report to this position.
The WLM is a library, museum and archives that collects and displays materials and supports research related to anesthesiology and anesthesia. It ranks among the world’s premier collections devoted to anesthesia history and also serves as a medical library serving primarily historical research. Its Mission is: “To Advance Anesthesiology by Preserving and Sharing its Heritage and Knowledge.” The WLM traces its origins to 1933. It has been incorporated in Illinois since 1987 and is a 501(c)(3) approved organization. Located in Schaumburg, IL, the WLM is closely related to the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) with its offices located within the ASA Headquarters building. The ASA is a medical association which serves a growing membership of more than 53,000 physician anesthesiologists, medical students and care team?members. In addition to space in the ASA headquarters, the WLM leases about 9400 square feet of nearby space for portions of its collections and operations.
The Director of the WLM is a key member of the WLM senior leadership team providing the strategic and operational planning for the WLM to accomplish its Mission. The position is responsible for the execution of the strategic plan in order to position the WLM for the future and the overall management and operation of the WLM in order to service its mission and patrons. The Director leads and manages all WLM staff in areas of service and works with the WLM Board and Committees. The Director is also a key interface between the WLM and ASA. The position is not static and evolves along with the needs, plans and activities of the WLM.
Implementation of strategic plan, goals, projects, and policies set by the Board of Trustees.
Works with WLM Board and Committees and organizes meetings, calls and related information distribution.
Leads and manages staff and evaluates and recommends staff resources and support.
With guidance and direction from the WLM President and Secretary-Treasurer, initiates and develops the annual budget and actively participates in the entire process.
In conjunction with ASA Finance and WLM President and Secretary-Treasurer, manages WLM finances consistent with the annual budget.
Responsible for WLM collections and spaces in all locations including the Rare Book Room and the off-site space.
Manages the acquisition and disposition of books, artifacts, archives and other items for addition to the WLM collections.
Ensures exhibit maintenance and updates.
With the WLM Board, creates development plans for the WLM and assures their execution. Manages development projects including donor-tracking, follow up and reporting.
Coordinates research requests from WLM and ASA Members and directs these members to relevant WLM Library, Archives, Museum and Rare Book Resources.
Collaborates with ASA staff and departments.
Anticipated Projects Over the Next Four Years:
Manage acquisition/planning/construction/move to new off-site collections facility.
Enhance and expand successful development program.
Achieve accreditation by American Alliance of Museums.
New iteration of three-year strategic plan.
About the WLM:
The WLM operates under the governance of a volunteer nine-member Board of Trustees whose anesthesiologist members are approved by the ASA. The ASA provides employment services for four full-time WLM employees (one position currently open) including its Director. Committees composed of primarily anesthesiologists also serve the WLM. Physical exhibits including a timeline of anesthesia exhibit are located within the central core of the ASA Headquarters building. Individuals may visit the exhibits by appointment during hours the ASA is open. Many other visitors to the ASA Headquarters buildings including individuals attending meetings held there will take time to visit the exhibits.
The WLM’s collections include about 2600 rare books dating to 1484, about 13,000 additional books, 40 domestic and international journal titles, newsletter runs, comprehensive biographic information, photo collections and digital image files, more than 10,000 artifacts and over 100 archival collections from individuals and organizations. The ASA has designated the WLM to receive and maintain the ASA archives.
The WLM maintains its website at www.woodlibrarymuseum.org. The website received more than 128,000 individual visits during 2018, a 20% increase over 2019. It usually rates as the #1 Google hit for “history of anesthesia” and “history of anesthesiology” searches. Through the website, visitors worldwide can read digitized Rare Books on a range of topics, visit digitized Artifacts and Artworks, link to Living History Interviews in the Pender Collection or WLM on YouTube videos presenting items from the collections, wander the History of Anesthesia Timeline that mirrors the Schaumburg timeline exhibit, learn from Reflections on the WLM collections prepared by Honorary Curator George Bause, read selected WLM epublications, and search the On-line Catalog. Newly digitized and curated objects, manuscripts, books, interviews and recorded collection interpretations are added to the website on an ongoing basis. The WLM also offers a growing social media presence.
The WLM invites individuals researching aspects of anesthesia to apply for a Paul M. Wood Fellowship which supports research time at the WLM. Annually, the WLM sponsors the Lewis H. Wright Memorial Lectureship at the ASA Annual Meeting. Quadrennially, the WLM names the Laureate of the History of Anesthesia, a prestigious award honoring scholarship on the history of anesthesia.
The WLM operates on an annual cash accounted budget of about $700,000 in expenses with revenues of $400,000 from the ASA, $320,000 from endowment earnings and $70,000 of annual contributions.
Master’s degree in Library (and Information) Science, Museum Studies/Museology, Archival Sciences or History with a strong component of archives and/or museology courses from an accredited university. Master of Business Administration or business emphasis a plus.
Expertise in archive, library, and museum professional standards and best practices
Minimum of ten years of experience in archives, libraries or museums preferred
Experience in directing a non-profit preferred.
Medical association, medical sciences or other heritage and culture-oriented library, archive or museum education/experience preferred.
Knowledge of appropriate laws, methodologies and technologies.
Experience working with a Board of Trustees, Committees and volunteers.
Development management experience.
Demonstrated ability to lead an organization and staff, establish professional relationships, influence and negotiate outcomes.
Articulate with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent people/relationship skills.
Able to report to more than one person.
Experience with financial management of an organization including monitoring and interpreting financial report.
Ability to work with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
