Develops strategic plans and long range goals for the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center that strengthens the overall travel and tourism industry in Craven County. Oversees the marketing, sales and promotion of the Convention Center; directing the physical operation of events within the facility. Actively promotes the use of the Convention Center to maximize utilization to enhance revenue.
Develops strategic initiatives, annual budget, and capital improvement plans for future repairs and enhancements of the Convention Center. Administers and monitors annual Convention Center budget. Develops and administers the marketing plan for the Convention Center. The Director is the Convention Center’s point of contact for convention and meeting related businesses, restaurants, accommodations and attractions. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with local community and business leaders, military base representatives, chambers of commerce, and tourist-related businesses. Sets policies and procedures for the proper operation and maintenance of the facility and evaluates programs/services to identify needed enhancements, changes and expansions. Provides information/analysis and makes recommendations to the County Manager regarding the administration, policies, procedure, rates, structure, and strategic direction of the facility. Serves as public relations point of contact concerning operation and promotion of facility and its events. Oversees the Adult Beverage Program for the Convention Center.
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Business Administration, Hospitality Management, or related field. Degree with focus in convention and special events management preferred. Five years of experience as a manager of a convention, trade or conference center with a minimum of three years of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Thorough knowledge of convention, sales and hospitality industries. Considerable knowledge of management and supervision practices. Experience in developing and implementing promotions/events. Experience in developing and managing budgets in excess of $500,000. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with County officials, other public officials, employees, contractors and the general public. Strong interpersonal, business skills, verbal and written communication skills. Experience in conduct of strategic planning processes. Considerable knowledge of North Carolina ABC laws/regulations and the ability/skill to tactfully enforce the regulations.
Additional Salary Information: $81,677-$85,595. Competitive annual merit program available.

The 45,000 SF New Bern Riverfront Convention Center which is owned and managed by Craven County was created in 2000 with guest rooms within walking distance and 1700 guest rooms within a short drive, the venue in this historic yet modern community is perfect for events. The facility is in the process of restoration, renovation and refreshing after Hurricane Florence and it is anticipated to reopen the end of September 2019.
