Our client-partner NASCA is an independent organization of state Chief Administrators responsible for providing operational support to other state agencies. The Executive Director is a strategic leader and project manager responsible for carrying out plans, goals, objectives, and directives to ensure continued growth and success of the association.
In this role, you will:
Support volunteer leaders in establishing and achieving organization objectives
Manage association staff and lead key programs
Work to advance strategic goals and help identify potential barriers to success
Develop and implement policies to enhance operational excellence and build trust
Represent the association at meetings and with the staff of partner organizations
Represent AMR as the key point of contact for association leaders
Focus areas of this association include:
Association growth, including increased membership and new services/programs
Building and maintaining key strategic partnerships and corporate support
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience as an association executive and will provide professional experience in board and committee management, operations, finance, and the areas described in the key responsibilities below. The successful candidate will be a creative, innovative team player who can work effectively with all key stakeholders; bring an entrepreneurial spirit; and be committed to supporting the best interests of the organization.
Priority will be given to candidates with proven experience helping state governments effect change in government operations or previous employment in state government operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Forecasts conditions, assesses member needs, and allocates resources appropriately
Assists in setting strategic goals and develops strategies and programs to achieve them
Ensures programs, activities, and services are executed successfully to meet AMR’s contractual obligations and within budget expectations.
Recruits and orients state members and develops relationships to ensure state member engagement, satisfaction, and retention
Develops and executes the corporate partners program, including recruiting and retaining corporate partner members
Oversees the annual development of strategic priorities and ensures alignment of the research agenda, publications, webinars, and event content to those priorities
Maintains a strong understanding and awareness of the core strategies, emerging issues and foreseeable topics most important to membership
Manages a team of direct and indirect reports, serving as a mentor and coach
Coordinates services provided by other AMR teams to meet the needs of the association
Serves as the main point of contact for association leadership and media
Maintain relationships with affiliated organizations and intergovernmental partners
Schedules and participates in board and committee meetings and manages agendas, materials, reports and tracking of outcomes
Serves as a spokesperson for the association, as appropriate
Manages financial matters, assists in establishing the budget, and ensures that revenues and expenses are monitored against the budget
Establishes and ensures compliance with policies and bylaws
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Attention to detail, balanced with big-picture perspective; ability to prioritize and deliver multiple objectives simultaneously.
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills including teamwork, coaching, writing, listening, and speaking
Strong business, math and analytical skills.
Ability to work with diverse group of stakeholders
Demonstrated ability to implement continuous improvement initiatives and develop new initiatives from concept through implementation
Demonstrated track record in securing major funding and leading development activities
Knowledge of application of technology
Ability to guide, direct and manage multiple projects to achieve project goals on time and within budget
Proficient knowledge of Office 360/SharePoint and Microsoft Office Suites.
Experience working in a remote setting and managing remote teams and staff,
Ability to read, analyze and interpret legal documents, financial reports, and technical reports
Flexibility to accommodate the schedules of association leaders
The position will require availability for some evening and weekend meetings and occasional travel for conferences and board events.
Ability to travel 5-10 times per year to represent the association
Training and Experience:
Degree in public or business administration, or a related field
Five or more years as an Executive Director or other senior leadership position in an association or relevant nonprofit
Experience in state government administration or other pertinent experience related to state government operations preferred
CAE certification a plus
