The Manager of Business and Operations is a key leadership position within MAASE. This role supports the Executive Director in overseeing the organization’s business functions, financial operations, HR coordination, compliance systems, and organizational infrastructure. The Manager plays both strategic and operational roles—managing long-term financial planning, supporting business model sustainability, coordinating with outsourced HR and accounting partners, and ensuring smooth daily operations.
This position works closely with the MAASE team, outsourced vendors, and the MAASE Leadership Team. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable managing complex systems while supporting a remote, mission-driven nonprofit association.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Accounting
Coordinate daily financial processes and serve as the primary liaison with the outsourced accounting firm.
Lead long-term budget forecasting, financial modeling, and strategic financial planning aligned with organizational goals.
Manage and oversee organizational budgets, financial controls, cash flow monitoring, and reserve/investment policies.
Conduct bookkeeping for the MAASE Foundation in-house and gradually adopt selected bookkeeping responsibilities for MAASE as systems stabilize.
Ensure timely, accurate financial reporting for leadership, auditors, the Board, and committees.
Support audit preparation and compliance activities.
Oversee Bill.com, QuickBooks Online, and other financial tools (or equivalents).
Human Resources & Compliance
Serve as the internal HR liaison to the outsourced firm, coordinating onboarding/offboarding, payroll updates, policy needs, and benefits-related communication.
Maintain accurate personnel records, HR documentation, and compliance documents.
Support updates to the employee handbook and ensure alignment with state/federal employment requirements.
Maintain data privacy, confidentiality, and document retention systems.
Support risk management processes, including insurance, emergency planning, and business continuity.
Organizational Operations & Governance
Sustain effective governance processes and support board operations, including policy development, reporting, and compliance with bylaws.
Help track and move forward MAASE’s strategic plan priorities.
Maintain organizational policies, procedures, and position descriptions.
Oversee technology systems, user access, and data security in partnership with external vendors.
Manage contracts, vendor relationships, and RFP processes.
Business Planning & Program Sustainability
Develop and implement business plans for new or evolving MAASE initiatives.
Conduct financial feasibility analyses for proposed programs, products, or services.
Provide data-driven insights to support long-term organizational sustainability.
Collaboration & Communication
Provide operational support to the Executive Director and Associate Executive Director.
Collaborate closely with the Manager of Events and Engagement.
Communicate financial and operational updates with clarity to stakeholders.
Other Duties as assigned.
Work Environment
Remote work, with occasional in-person meetings in the Lansing area.
Some travel within Michigan for events or meetings.
Standard hours Monday–Friday, with occasional flexibility required.
Compensation
Salary: negotiable based on experience
Employment Type: Full-time, 40 hours/week (W–2)
Work Schedule:
Standard hours: 8:00 AM–5:00 PM with a one-hour lunch
Flexibility is often available while maintaining a 8 hour workday
Flexibility around meetings and scheduling as needed

Required Qualifications
At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in business operations, nonprofit administration, or financial management.
Demonstrated experience with bookkeeping or accounting processes.
Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
Comfort working in a remote environment and independently managing workload.
Ability to handle confidential information professionally.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Public Administration, or related field (preferred but not required).
Experience with QuickBooks or a similar accounting platform.
Experience working with an association, nonprofit, or membership organization.
Familiarity with HR processes or coordination.
Experience with project management systems or operational software.
Experience implementing business plans or conducting financial forecasting.
